Columbus City Council President Andrew Ginther said a decision has been made to equip Columbus Police Officers with body cameras in 2016.

“It will protect citizens, it will protect officers and it’s the right thing to do,” Ginther said.

A committee will be formed to study best practices and how to implement the body camera program.

Ginther, a Democratic candidate for Mayor, will have more to say on the decision at the Columbus Police Academy on Hague Avenue Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

The use of body cameras has become a key issue across the country following protests over officer involved shootings.
