A 30-year-old man was sentenced today to 20 years in prison for the beating death of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter.

Michael C. McDaniel entered an Alford plea to involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault and child endangering in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

Judge Charles Schneider imposed the sentence, which was recommended by the prosecutor and defense attorney, Adam Lee Nemann, as part of a plea agreement.

Nemann indicated that in an Alford plea, a defendant doesn’t admit guilt but concedes that the state has sufficient evidence to obtain a conviction.

McDaniel’s then-girlfriend, Jessica A. Lawrence, called 911 on Nov. 6, 2013, to report that her daughter Layla was unresponsive at their Northwest Side apartment.

Assistant Prosecutor Robert Letson said doctors at Nationwide Children’s Hospital determined that the child, covered in bruises, had bleeding on the brain and a broken orbital bone behind her right eye. She died the following day.

The mother had gone to work and left Layla at the apartment on Caleb Drive in McDaniel’s care, Letson said. She returned home to find the child unresponsive but waited about three hours before calling 911, he said.

Lawrence, 30, is awaiting trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter, child endangering and permitting child abuse.
